Preserving Urban Agriculture

The Arizona Urban Agriculture Foundation was established with a dual purpose: to safeguard and champion urban agriculture in the state of Arizona. We are driven by a profound commitment to educate the upcoming generation of farmers in the are of managing small-scale urban farms and to impart to everyone the significance of sustainable food sources.

Cultivating A

Community

At the heart of Agritopia is our Certified Organic farm. Production on this farm serves as a bridge between urban populations and the rural agricultural world. It helps to foster a deeper understanding of the toil, precision, and passion that goes into the production of our food. There are row crops, the citrus and stone fruit orchard, and we even have an area where we grow Medjool dates and olives.

The Foundation presently participates in 52 farmers’ markets annually, supplies produce to a multitude of restaurants, and partners with local food banks. Through a partnership with the Sun Produce Co-Op, we are able to distribute our produce to 65+ customers in the following Arizona counties: Maricopa, Pinal, Pima, Yavapai, Coconino and Mohave

Education For

Agriculture

Equipping the next generation with hands-on experience in agriculture training and preparation offers valuable insights into various aspects of crop production. We are helping to provide a meaningful way of life and hands-on training for future workforce. Annually, our team conducts 65 Farm Hands tours and provides an enriching experience to roughly 1300 students who visit the farm.

In a world where most of the population is at least two generations removed from agricultural practices, tours provide a vital opportunity for individuals interested in the food production process to establish connections with farmers. Attendees not only gain insight into the farmer’s personal journey, but also into the methods employed in agriculture and how farming practices have evolved over time. For some, the experience extends beyond conversation; they get to immerse themselves in the farming process.

The Future of

Agriculture

The Arizona Urban Ag Foundation came into existence in late 2015 when the Johnston Family recognized the imperative to safeguard farmland in the face of Gilbert’s ongoing expansion.

To kickstart this endeavor, the Johnston Family generously contributed twelve acres they had diligently cultivated since 1960, effectively establishing what we now know as the Arizona Urban Agriculture Foundation.

Sharing our

Community

Our mission and vision are rooted in empowering and compelling others to join us. We exemplify this by opening our space to host events that attract guests from across the broader Valley region.

By hosting events, we have the opportunity to play a crucial role in raising awareness and educating the general public about the Urban Arizona Agriculture Foundation.

Reflection of

Agriculture

The Biblical Garden is a special section of the farm. The climate of our Arizona desert, and the middle east are very similar. In the Biblical Garden, located north of the Community Garden, one can find numerous plants and their citations in the bible. It’s a peaceful place to sit and reflect and enjoy the scenery.

Support our Mission

The Foundation provides education through a farm to school program, Farm Hands, that aims to teach youth about the food system within their own community. The goal is to inspire future farmers with a focus on health and the importance of a strong local food system.
